The Hot Tub

I’ve always wanted a hot tub, but never had the money to buy one. Well, last night on the way home from work I stopped by Clover pools and put a down payment on a beautiful hot tub. I’m at a place in life professionally where I can afford such luxories. I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am, so I should be able to enjoy the fruits of my labor, right?!  Yeah, I need to keep telling myself that.

I’m not rich by any means, but I know how blessed I am financially. So with that said, why do I feel so GUILTY for buying a hot tub?! I should be enjoying this moment!!! Most of my adult life I’ve lived paycheck to paycheck. But for the past few years, I’ve been in pretty good shape financially. I have savings, retirement and college funds, credit cards are paid off, yadda, yadda, yadda. I guess after being broke for so long it’s hard to get past the mindset of  “I don’t NEED it, so I shouldn’t buy it.” But for some reason, when it came time to actually plunk down the cash, I decided in this particular instance it’s ok to live a little. A hot tub is a total waste of money. Will I have fun in it? Will I make some great memories talking with friends over a glass of wine? Yes and yes. Could I have dropped the cash into a retirement fund, or given some money to charity? Yes to those two questions as well. I guess it’s the sheer indulgance in something that really isn’t a necessity that makes me question it. But hey, I’ve been to hell and back over the past year or two so I’ve decided to bring a little bit o’ heaven to my back yard. What the heck, George Bush is paying for a big chuck of the hot tub anyway, so why not. God bless America!

Have you ever blown some cash on something you didn’t really need and feel just a little guilty about it afterward?!

I’ve had my hot tub for 9 years now. I have 2 sons who love to use it as a swimming pool.

As my pastor likes to say: “you can pay now and play later, or play now and pay later.” I think you have paid and now you are able to play. So don’t keep kicking yourself and instead enjoy!
